How it works...

Patented atomizing technology combined with patented electrostatic

technology ensures you receive even tanning coverage over your

entire body.

California Tan's solution is polarized (given a +ve magnetic charge)

before it is atomized by the four state-of-the-art values. This ensures

every particle (the smallest tanning particles in the World) has received

a totally uniform charge, taking on the characteristics of perfect,

synchronized air-borne magnets.

You stand on the polished metal plates. As the solution leaves the

nozzles under pressure precisely controlled by a computer, the particles are attracted to your skin

(-ve charge) which has received a `micro-boost of electrostatic energy to increase your body's natural magnetic field (don't worry, you won't even notice this energy).

Upon contact with your skin the atomized particles neutralize the surface so no other tanning solution is attracted, and absorbs instantly into the skin. Because the particles are so small, they

pass through more layers of your skin to create a longer lasting, perfectly even tan.

This sub 5 second process occurs twice per session (back and front), therefore, the process only involves you turning around.

Your session is completed with an automatic, full body drying process which lasts 30 seconds. You can repeat this if needed.

How the Skin Creates a Sunless Tan

What is DHA?

The active ingredient in California Tan's sunless tanning solutions is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA was initially discovered in the 1920's but was first used as a tanning agent in the 1960's. It is derived from sugar beets and for over 4 decades scientists have studied it's tanning mechanics, skin tolerance and physiochemical properties. Coppertone was the first to sell an over-the counter product - Quick Tan. Unfortunately Quick Tan's streaks and orange color quickly encapsulated everything viewed as negative about sunless tanning! Thankfully formulations have moved on somewhat since then and the tan you can expect from any of the California Tan Line is golden, and most of all natural!

How does is work?

DHA reacts with proteins, including amino acids in the outermost layers of the skin to effectively dye the skin. Because the color change only occurs on approx the first 2-3 layers of skin, as the skin sheds, so does the coloration. Skin replaces itself naturally every 28 days. Therefore most sunless tans will not last much longer than 4-7 days. This can be prolonged by using the California Tan, Tan Extender (click on Sunless Tanning Products).

Is DHA safe?

DHA was first approved for cosmetic use in 1973 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is approved for application externally. Its is therefore recommended that customers follow these instructions:

~Close eyes during spray applications

~Purse lips (cover lips) or apply lip balm during spray applications

~Avoid directly breathing in solution during spray application

~Do not ingest any of the products

Sunless Tanning Application Tips

Whether sunless tanning with professional spray equipment at a salon or using sunless products in the privacy of your home, this quick-reference guide will give you all the pointers you need for that beautiful, golden-brown, 'just returned from the tropics' tan.

Preparation

~ Exfoliate your skin with PRIMER at least 2 hours prior to sunless tanning application to smooth skin for even tanning results. Spend a little extra time on knees, elbows, feet and hands. Exfoliate between sessions if necessary to maintain smooth, healthy-looking skin.

~ Shave at least 6 hours before your sunless tanning session. Wax at least 12 hours before.

~ Do NOT moisturize skin at least 2 hours prior to your sunless tanning session. Lotions can create a barrier, preventing the absorption of sunless tanning solution and products.

~ Use facial wipes to remove any make-up and deodorant prior to sunless tanning application for best results.

~ Remove all jewelry.

~ If you have long hair, tie it back. Put on the hair cap with ears, forehead and hairline exposed ~ Wear dark, loose fitting clothes. Sunless solution washes out of most clothing, but the immediate cosmetic bronzer could wipe off on lighter clothes, giving a temporary appearance of discoloration.

Do not wear wool, nylon or silk during or after your sunless application for at least 8 hours as bronzer may react with these fabrics and could cause staining.

Barrier Cream

Apply an even, light coat of barrier cream to the palms of your hands, on fingernails and cuticles, on the bottom of your feet and on toenails and cuticles. Also, lightly sweep barrier cream over the back of your heels and on any other areas you do not wish to have a sunless tan develop.

What Not To Do

~ After your sunless tanning applications, you MUST wait at least 6 hours before you shower.

This will allow time for the self-tanning reaction to occur on the skin. Leave overnight if possible.

~ Do Not moisturize until after your first shower. This could effect the immediate reaction of the sunless solution on the skin and cause streaking.

~ Do Not swim after your sunless tanning session. Immediate contact with water, chlorine and salt water could effect the immediate reaction of the sunless solution. Also, keep in mind that chlorine and salt water may dry your skin and cause your sunless tan to fade faster.

~ Wait at least 6 hours before you exercise. Excessive perspiration could effect the immediate reaction of the sunless solution on the skin.

~ Do Not exfoliate right away unless there are areas you want to remove. When you do exfoliate, remember to do so gently and evenly to preserve an even, sunless tan.

There are many variables that affect the quality of a sunless tan. Two individuals can receive the exact same sunless treatment and experience very different results.

1. Skin Type – Sunless color reacts differently with different skin types. What may appear as a deep, dark color on one person may look more golden on another person. Also, in general, tanners with darker skin tones will experience darker sunless tanning results. The only way to know for sure how a sunless tan is going to look on someone’s skin is to do a spot test prior to application.

2. Pre-Application Care – It is recommended that customers exfoliate prior to a sunless tanning treatment and carefully apply barrier cream to hands and feet. If a tanner has not thoroughly exfoliated, their tan will fade faster and they may experience a spotty appearance on the skin as their tan fades. If barrier cream is not properly applied, it can result in stained cuticles or unnatural-looking spots and streaks on the hands and feet.

3. Post-Application Care – For the first 6 hours following sunless application, it is critical that customers avoid any activity that could interfere with the sunless reaction on their skin, including bathing, moisturizing, swimming, or other physical activity that could cause excessive perspiration. After the first day, it is recommended that they moisturize daily, especially after bathing, to prolong their sunless tanning results.

Don't worry if you see color washing off from your first shower - this is normal. What you see washing off is the immediate cosmetic bronzer. What is left behind is a beautiful, sunless tan. Cleanse your skin daily with California Tan Sunless Moisture Wash, starting after your first shower.

Moisturize your skin daily with California Tan Sunless Extenders and Perfectors every time you bathe to maintain and prolong color. It has a light DHA bronzer to help extend color and will moisturize the skin to keep it smooth, soft and glowing. Apply to the face and body using a circular motion and wash or wipe hands after application.

Even out results,fix mistakes, and intensify results with any of the specialist SELF-TANNERS. If your tan starts to fade unevenly or you just need a tanning "pick me up", apply either of these lotion or spray formulas to the face, neck and body using small, circular motions. Wash hands with soap immediately after application. A great looking tan will develop in 2 to 4 hours. Reapply as needed for deeper color.

Fill in tan lines and stay sun-kissed. Use BRONZING POWDER if your facial tan seems to fade faster than the rest of your body or you need to fill in tan lines.

At Home Sunless Application and Touch-Ups

~ Do not wear wool, nylon, or silk fabrics during the application.

~ Apply California Tan Sunless Self Tanner evenly to your skin, using circular motions. Avoid bottoms of feet. Apply only a thin layer to knees and elbows.

~ Wash hands immediately afterwards.

~ Remember to wear a sunscreen as most sunless solutions do not contain a sunscreen.
